Teenager lynched over robbery

Mai Mahiu, Kenya: A teenager was lynched by irate members of the public in Mai Mahiu trading centre after stealing household goods and cash.

This brought to three the number of people who have been lynched in the area in the last one week over robbery cases.

The suspect had allegedly broken into a house and stolen electronics and cash when members of the public caught up with him.

A witness Peter Njoroge said that the youth was in a group of suspects who have being terrorizing area residents for the last one month.

"The teenager has on various occasions been warned against his behaviour but he has ignored this until today," he said.

The stolen goods were recovered and the body taken to the area mortuary as police began their investigations into the incident.

Meanwhile, police are investigating youths in various IDPs camps along the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu road over cases of robbery targeting long truck drivers.

In the last couple of months, at least five drivers have been attacked and robbed on the highway after their vehicles broke down.

One of the victims Joshua Wambugu said that the suspects were placing spikes on the highway leading to tyre bursts.

"As we parked to change the tyres, a group of ten youths attacked and robbed us all our personal effects before disappearing into the nearby IDPs camp," he said.

Wambugu added that other drivers had complained of similar attacks adding that the suspects were not keen on the cargo but the driver's personal effects.

A senior police officer who declined to be named due to the recent directive barring them from addressing the press said that they were investigating the IDPs camps.

The officer said that patrols along the busy road had been intensified adding that it was a matter of time before they caught up with the suspects.

"We have recorded at least two cases of such attacks along the highway and fingers point at IDPs in various camps in the area," said the officer.
