Immigration boss Gordon Kihalangwa shuts down regional offices over security concerns

NAIROBI, KENYA: The new Immigration boss has ordered the closure of four key offices, in four counties, which issue passports citing security concerns.

The residents of those counties will have to seek services involving passport  issuance from Nairobi offices.

Major-General (rtd) Gordon Kihalangwa said the offices had to be closed down as the department reviews its procedures in an attempt to seal the operational loopholes that had allowed aliens to access crucial immigration documents.

"There is nowhere in the world where issuance of passports has been decentralised. That is why we have ordered that all passports be issued from Nairobi for the sake of our security and stability," he said.

Those affected immediately include Garissa, Embu, Nakuru and Eldoret while Kisumu and Mombasa will follow by end year.

This means those in need of the documents and are out of Nairobi will have to wait longer. He said other immigration services will be offered at the affected offices.
