Automated teller machine gives away free money to lucky passers-by

London: Word soon spread as people tweeted about the free cash they were receiving causing a rush to get in on the free cash.

The machine didn’t ask for a PIN number or take any details from customers’ cards, but aside from that the on-screen process was identical to genuine cash machines.

Hugo Ellis and his girlfriend Celeste Powell, students at Goldsmiths University, were handed £500 by the machine according to the Daily Mail.

Hugo told the paper: 'We were just in MacDonald’s having a cup of tea, and then on the walk home we stopped at the Super Rich ATM machine to get some cash.

"We’ve just moved to London as students and we definitely weren’t expecting anything like this to happen, my girlfriend nearly cried!"

It turns out though, the 'Super Rich Cash Machine' was all a PR stunt for an online bookies.

Betfred installed the machine to celebrate its new feature Price Rush, which is an anagram of ‘Super Rich’.

Price Rush gives customers better odds than they bargained for by taking each bet a customer places on the Sportsbook and checking to see if there are bigger odds on the Exchange at that time.

Betfair Brand Product Manager Andy Holmes, said: “The odds on getting more money than you expected at a cash machine are pretty slim but yesterday our Super Rich Cash Machines Price Rushed transactions, giving some users much more money than they requested."
