National Land Commission starts review of Lamu titles

The National Land Commission will Thursday start reviewing documents on the controversial sale of 500,000 acres of public land to 22 firms in Lamu County. Officials from the commission were Tuesday perusing records from other regions to ascertain their legality following disputes.

These include Nairobi, Kakamega, Nakuru and Mombasa, Kilifi, Machakos, Embu, Kisumu and Trans Nzoia counties. The move comes after the Executive ordered revocation of some grants and title deeds. Tuesday, chairman Muhammad Swazuri said NLC was going through the documents from other areas.

"We will start on Lamu on Thursday to see whether there was any problem. We will also wait for reports from the police and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission before we make our decision but we will not interfere with their work," he said.

The Constitution mandates the agency to establish the legality of land parcels that have been brought into question.

Swazuri said their major concern was to review titles and owners will be required to say how they acquired their parcels.

"They can either send their representatives or written submissions to us, or even come in person," the NLC boss said.

The process is expected to run until October 3 during which NLC will hear complaints and submissions from concerned parties.
