Pusetu issues strike threat over health workers salaries

An umbrella body of trade unions has given the Government a two-week ultimatum to address the ongoing crisis in the health sector over delayed salaries or face a nationwide strike.

Federation for Public Service Trade Unions of Kenya (Pusetu-K) National Chairman Tom Mboya Odege said the country needs the services of health workers, particularly during this time when Ebola poses a huge threat.

"We do not want to see health matters being politicised. The national government should convene a meeting to find a permanent solution to this issue. We want the health workers to be in hospitals, especially during this time when we are facing the Ebola threat so that any affected citizen can be attended to," he said.

Odege said blocking the national carrier, Kenya Airways, from flying to West Africa as a way of curbing the spread of Ebola would not help.

Pusetu General Secretary Charles Mukhwaya said they had joined the Central Organisation of Trade Unions to compel the State to pay all medical staff their July 2014 salaries and other outstanding payments to avert an industrial action and subsequently alleviate the suffering of Kenyans seeking medical attention.

Dr Mukhwaya said the health sector and management of all county staff in relation to remuneration, promotions and training should be centralised to avoid inconveniences witnessed in the last two months.

Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists' Union Chairman Dr Victor Ngani said the health sector faced various challenges, ranging from reduction of medical workers' salaries to delayed payment.

Kenya National Union of Teachers Chairman Wilson Sossion was also present.
