Inside job cited in poaching probe

A task force formed to probe poaching activities in Laikipia has cited inside help within a local rhino sanctuary.

The team said poachers were getting information from either the former or current employees of Ol Jogi Ranch, where poachers shot dead four rhinos in one night.

County Commissioner Wilson Wanyanga said the task force recommended that the security team monitoring rhinos in the conservancy be separated from Kenya Police Reservists (KPR) to avoid collusion with poachers.

"It emerged that the security team comprising KPR was feeding poachers with information and they recommended that the team should be relieved of the role of guarding rhinos," said Mr Wanyanga.

The task force was formed a month ago by Laikipia County's security team to investigate rampant poaching in the region following the night massacre of black rhinos at Ol Jogi conservancy.

The team, which completed its work and handed the report to Wanyanga, comprised members of the security department and a representative of the ranchers.
