Kenya: Three suspected robbers escaped after police shot at them when they were found siphoning petrol from a transit lorry on the Nakuru-Eldoret highway Tuesday.

Molo District Administration Police Commander Joseph Mwangi said the suspects defied orders by officers to surrender, forcing the latter to open fire on them. “The suspects were siphoning petrol from the lorry and immediately police officers arrived, they ran away,” said Mr Mwangi.

The officers recovered a motorbike and a consignment of plastic goods they had offloaded from the lorry.

The AP boss said he had written to the Kenya Revenue Authority to help them determine owners of the motorbike of registration number KMDF 203Q.

“Police officers are conducting investigation to arrest the suspects who are still at large. We are also collaborating with KRA to help in identifying the owner of the recovered motorbike,” he said.

Mwangi said he had established five AP camps along the Nakuru –Eldoret highway to curb the rising cases of highway robberies.
