Following decades of neglect Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Kapsabet will finally get a facelift following an initial Sh100 million budget allocation by the Nandi County Government.

The work on the stadium is set to commence at the end of March after the completion of the tendering process.

“We are in the final stages of the procurement process. The architectural and structural designs are ready. We have also worked on a bill of quantities for refurbishing and upgrading of the stadium. Work on the site will commence immediately once the tendering process is done,” said Patrick Sang, the Nandi County Executive Secretary for Sports.

Sang, a former 3,000m steeplechase world silver medallist, explains that the stadium’s reconstruction process was delayed because the facility lacked a genuine title deed and that private developers had encroached on the land.

“We now have a title deed for the stadium. We have also sent eviction notices to people who had previously encroached on the land. I can report that we are facing very little resistance. Most of them are moving out to create space for the stadium’s reconstruction,” said Sang.

Some of the new features the stadium will receive are a perimeter fence, VIP stand and sanitary facility, which will be placed beneath the main stand. There will also be a main stand for VIP and a public car park. The changing rooms will be separated by male and female gender. An effective sewer line and earthwork will also be included.

The Nandi-Hills stadium is also set to benefit after an initial Sh20 million  was allocated to it for refurbishment.
