The team behind the Uwezo report

Kenya: The faces behind the third Uwezo National Learning Assessment are educationists with vast experience in the sector.

Winny Cherotich, an assistant programmes officer in-charge of research at Uwezo Kenya was instrumental in the formulation of the report. She coordinated the team that wrote the 2012 report and also was responsible for bringing the report to completion.

She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Special Needs Education and is currently pursuing a Master’s in Education at Kenyatta University.

The team comprises of Sara Ruto, a seasoned educationist and researcher with over ten years of post-PhD experience in Education. As regional manager for Uwezo East Africa, she has published extensively in areas of gender and education, health education, comparative education and education in marginalisation.

Childhood studies

Another formidable team member is Teresa Ocharo, who holds a PhD in Early childhood studies from Kenyatta University. A dedicated Uwezo partner, trainer and adviser, her research interests encompass early childhood studies, girl education and instructional methods.

Daniel Wesonga, currently undertaking his PHD in Economics of Education and Policy Studies, is also part of the team that drafted the report. He has sat in the Uwezo Kenya’s Advisory Board since 2009. He boosts with over 20 years university teaching experience.

Joyce Kinyanjui and John Mugo also took part in the drafting of the report, which shows that more than one in every ten pupils in class eight cannot do class two level division.

Kinyanjui is the programme manager for opportunity schools at the Women Educational Researchers of Kenya while Mugo who holds a PhD in special needs education is a seasoned researcher who has conducted over 40 education studies in both academic and applied research.
