Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission says last poll was one of Kenya’s best

Nairobi, Kenya: Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has come out to defend its battered image, saying it has been condemned unfairly.

The commission says a cross-section of Kenyans have been bashing it for technology hitches that marred the March 4 General Election, which it maintains was one of the best.

IEBC vice-chair Lilian Mahiri-Zaja and chief executive officer James Oswago said the commission cannot stand accused of bungling an election due to failure of the electronic voter identification device and the electronic tallying system.

The two maintained that IEBC did its best in delivering the polls, the country’s first election where Kenyans voted for six candidates instead of the traditional three.

Oswago, who appeared to respond to Coalition for Reforms and Democracy’s (CORD) allegations of favouring Jubilee, refuted the claims, saying no one was disadvantaged.

CORD leader Raila Odinga has called for the disbandment of the electoral body, terming it the most ineffective and corrupt body in the history of multi-party Kenya.
