Adam and Eve was no mistake, Cardinal Njue tells US President Obama

KENYA: Head of the Catholic Church in Kenya John Cardinal Njue has hit out at US President Barack Obama for urging African nations to decriminalise homosexuality.

Njue said the US cannot be teachers of African countries when they have “ruined their own societies”.

“Let him forget, forget and forget,” Njue retorted in an apparent angry reaction to Obama’s remarks in Senegal on Thursday.

Njue maintained that Africans and Kenyans in particular must determine their own destiny without lessons from foreign nations irrespective of their high standing status in the world.

“I don’t think God was making a mistake when he created Adam and Eve and told them what to do. We must determine our own destiny.”

Laying bare a clash of cultures, President Obama urged African leaders to extend equal rights to gays and lesbians but was bluntly rebuked by Senegal’s president, who said his country “still isn’t ready” to decriminalise homosexuality.

Obama kicked off the storm as he began his week-long trip to three African States by urging them to stop treating homosexuality as a crime. “When it comes to how the State treats people, how the law treats people, I believe that everybody has to be treated equally,” Mr Obama said.
