Campus divas and rogue morgue attendant

By David Odongo

The Internet has made it easier for girls to hook up with rich sugar daddies. Through social media sites like Facebook, many girls can post their details and any interested man is free to contact them for business.

In Kenya, the Facebook page, Campus Divas for Rich Men shocked many parents, but in Tanzania, it is now the in thing. Through Facebook pages like University Tanzania  Jokes, Jicho la Mvulana Liko Fasta Kuliko Google, Benki ya Utamu Tanzania among other sites are now used by high school and university students to sell their ‘wares’.

The sites aren’t only used for sex trade but also sale of drugs as well as other criminal activities.

The students posting on such pages leave their contact details, as well as their photos. They also clearly state how much they will charge and how far they can go to ensure a man gets his money’s worth.

Many of the students are not afraid of posting which hostels and colleges they come from, and majority are from Saint Augustine University (Saut), University of Dar es Salaaam,  Chuo Kikuu cha Dar es Salaam (UDSM), University of Dodoma(Udom).

On to more grave matters, a 56-year-old mortuary attendant at Sinza District Hospital has been accused of fleecing residents by promising to dispose the bodies of three babies in an incinerator he knew was dysfunctional.

Lawrence Mhuri, who is employed as a security guard and also doubles as a mortuary attendant at the health institution is facing three counts of contravening a section of the Criminal Law Reform and Codification Act (Violating a Corpse).

Prosecutor Foster Abeki told the court that on January 1, Fortune Vengesa had a stillbirth and the baby was put in the mortuary at Sinza District Hospital.

He said Mhuri then approached her the following day and offered to cremate the corpse at a cost of Sh1,000 in the hospital incinerator. This was despite the fact that the incinerator had been dysfunctional for three years.

The accused then cremated the body by burning the corpse at the hospital backyard in the absence of the woman and other relatives. He allegedly used petrol to carry out the cremation.

In the second incident,  the remains of an eight-month-old baby were taken to the district mortuary.

But they were approached by Mhuri who offered to cremate the baby for a fee of Sh1,000.

He later told the relatives that he had cremated the baby in their absence, but the body was later discovered dumped at the hospitals waste organic pit during a photo shoot.
