Transition team assures public officers jobs

The National Transition Authority has maintained civil servants would retain their jobs when the county system of government comes into effect next year.

“No one will lose his job just because of the county system of governance,” said NTA official Simon Kyachi.

The officer explained that 70 per cent of county government workers would be employed locally while 30 per cent sourced from other regions.

Speaking in Migori town yesterday, Kyachi, said the Constitution had also put in place provisions aimed at protecting civil servants during and after the transition.

With just four months to the General Election, the clock is fast ticking towards the timeline for launching the governments in 47 counties.

Kyachi stated that whereas there will be no new offices would be built by then, there was provision for renovations on selected buildings.

NTA is charged with auditing assets and debts of local authorities, tallying of staff of central and local authorities, preparing county profiles and assisting new county officials in drafting budgets.

Yesterday, Kyachi cautioned ministries, departments and local authorities to desist from transferring public assets at their disposal without express authority.

He was supported by lawyer Joash Dache from the authority who explained that public officers will either be seconded in counties or remain in national government depending whether their ministries are devolved or not.
