Kenyan to face assault charges in US court

A court has ordered that a woman accused of assaulting an ailing 90-year-old American be extradited to the US to stand trial.

Chief Magistrate Lucy Nyambura Thursday ruled that Anastacia Olouch be taken to US for assaulting and causing grievous harm to her former employer. The magistrate, however, directed that US government settle the cost of the extradition.

In her verdict, the magistrate noted that the evidence contained in exhibits and video played in court would have justified committal if the crime was committed in Kenya.

Mrs Nyambura added that the extradition laws allow such crimes to be tried in another country.

Oluoch was charged in a Baltimore Court in Maryland but skipped bail and fled to Kenya in July 2007.

The US requested Kenya to have the woman extradited.

A video played in court showed the suspect striking Taylor whom she was employed to take care of.

Nyambura said Kenya and US signed an extradition agreement in 1969 and is therefore bound by it.

Olouch asked the court to suspend the decision for 30 days so that she can seek an appropriate order from the High Court but the magistrate declined.

An FBI officer, Mr Thomas Relford, told the court that interpol issued a warrant of arrest and the extradition proceedings were filed and she was arrested four years later in Kenya.
