Catholic priest accused of organising sex parties, swimming naked

A Catholic priest in Kiambu has been suspended after claims that he was sleeping with minors.

It is alleged that he often invited young girls to his residence where he would seduce them and offer them alcohol before getting intimate with them.

The clergy, who served at Kambaa Parish in Githunguri, was also accused of helping pregnant girls procure abortions, which is strongly condemned by the church.

According to a local daily, Father James Mungai, the dean in Githunguri confirmed the allegations but could not comment on the matter.

Stephen Mwaniki, a chief in the area, on his part, stated that the cases had not been reported to him so he was not in a position to discuss the matter in detail.

One parent revealed that his daughter had been a victim and revealed that the priest used to swim naked.

The priest apparently planned a tour for youth members of the church and upon their return, some were pregnant and procured abortion.

Cases of sexual abuse in the church have often been highlighted and recently Pope Francis stripped two Chilean bishops of their duties as priests amid claims that they were linked to the sexual abuse of minors.

The Vatican issued a statement on the defrocking of Francisco José Cox Huneeus, archbishop emeritus of La Serena, and Marco Antonio Órdenes Fernández, archbishop emeritus of Iquique after a meeting between the pontiff and the president of Chile.

It was announced as Pope Francis met Chile's President Sebastian Piñera in the Vatican, where the two spoke particularly about "the painful scourge of abuse of minors".

Over 100 Catholic clergy are being investigated in Chile over alleged sex crimes and attempts to cover them up.
