Dr. Tatu Kamamu moved to the Machakos High Court on Wednesday seeking to have the Anti-FGM Board abolished
She says the laws prohibiting Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) are unconstitutional
A female medical doctor in Machakos has asked the court to allow women who want to get the cut to be allowed to do do.
Dr. Tatu Kamau says the laws prohibiting Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) are unconstitutional.
In a case filed before Justice David Kemei on Wednesday 17, 2017, Kamau says she also wants the abolishment of the Anti-FGM Board, instrumental creating awareness about the matter.
She says the law is unfavorable because it damages cultural practices engraved in different Kenyan communities.
This has not been received well by Kenyans, who took to social media to condemn her actions, as most feel FGM should be completely abolished.
Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika has also blasted the woman’s actions as shameful and retrogressive, using her Twitter handle to respond to the matter saying, “There afterall seems to be no end in sight for these ‘civilised’ fools. Shameful & Retrogressive! Am bewildered by this woman!!â€
Here are some of Kenyans’ reactions on social media:Â
@MaestrosKenya what is your take on Doctor Tatu Kamau's decision to go to court asking for legalisation of FGM taking in mind she has an over 20 years experience in both medical and public health fields. Is westernization what we call civilisation?? That's my question— MOSES WAMBUGU (@MOSESWGICHINGIR) January 19, 2018
Out of the blue FGM court case filed in a Machakos court, debates on TV.... Wasn't this done with eons ago? What's the hidden motive i wonder.January 19, 2018
So you're racist if you don't support FGM? What a load of BS! Sorry women aren't objects or property, so we can make our own decisions regarding our body.— Canadian Porkchop Liv ???????????????? (@iamsladewils0n) January 19, 2018
Which forms of discrimination and abuse are inflicted on women because of their biological sex? I'll start; period poverty, period shaming, FGM, selective abortion, infanticide, restrictive abortion laws and laws in general that single out females for fewer rights.— Jammy (@strump3t) January 19, 2018
A female Doctor in Kenya has applied to court to have a law that bans FGM nullified because she claims it "discriminates" against girls. ????— Bongani Maswazi (@bonganimaswazi) January 19, 2018
I remember my lecturer at Africa Nazarene University preaching to us the same shit Dr. Tatu Kamau is.
That decriminalizing FGM and having it procured in a medical facility..you know will sorta make the whole thing better or bearable?
I walked out of that class.
And that course.— Ayuma (@Ayuma_Analo) January 19, 2018

She’s probably suffering from FGM. So I don’t care how pretty her hair is..or isn’t... Who can tell...how dumb.— elizabeth ornelas (@FDRepublican) January 19, 2018
The thing people are doing is giving FGM the job of holding their traditions and their peoplehood together instead of blaming the wider colonial project for taking away most other ways to belong to each other and identify as one.— Dr. Njoki Ngumi (@njokingumi) January 19, 2018
