New mothers reveal the horrors of giving birth at Kenyatta National Hospital

If confessions of patients on social media are anything to go by, Nairobi’s Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) could be a robbery and rape hotpsot as complaints about the happenings in the hospital’s corridors continue to escalate.

In the Facebook group Buyer Beware – Kenya (ORIGINAL), one Mildred Atty Owiso complained about the happenings in the hospital, saying that people were being robbed in the elevators and on the queues.

She also cautioned new mothers whose kids were in the nursery about being raped by unknown people when they go to breastfeed their newborns.

In her post, she talks about seeing a woman dressed in Christian regalia being caught red-handed trying to steal something from another lady’s bag. She then confesses that she met a lady who was nearly raped, had she not screamed at the top her voice to scare away the attacker.

The post aroused tremendous engagement on social media, with the comment section proving that the issues she was talking about were real and that many had gone through the same or at least, saw the same.

Most people who reacted to this, especially new mothers, say that the issue has been going on for a while now, saying that they had to walk in groups while still admitted in order to avoid being raped. Others go on to say the mortuary attendants are a big threat.

In 2013, KNH suspended a male nurse after he allegedly raped a small girl who was admitted for burns.

CS Cleopa Mailu has said he regrets if the alleged actions are true and has instructed the hospital management to beef up security measures to protect parents and their relatives.

Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board have also criticised the happenings in the hospital and have asked for the safety of patients in hospitals.
