Each classroom to have 15-20 learners - Magoha announces conditions for reopening schools

Education CS George Magoha has given several conditions for reopening schools in September amid COVID-19 in the country.

Speaking on Wednesday, June 24, CS Magoha stated that each classroom should accommodate 15-20 students to observe the social distancing rule.

The Education CS added that teachers should report to schools two weeks before the schools reopen.

He further added that the state will ensure they acquire 24 million masks that will be given to each student when they resume.

In addition, all schools will be provided with thermo guns to check the temperatures of individuals accessing the institutions.

However, a section of Kenyans on Twitter expressed their concerns about having a maximum of 20 learners in a class.

Susan Rotich says “100% transition to Secondary school didnt work well, one class having to accomodate 60 students and above. That means National schools will need 3 more classrooms per stream!”.

Her sentiments were echoed by Ken Aseka who says, “Practical? Kenyan schools are crowded. Some children still learn under trees. Is government planting more shade trees for such learners? For those who sit on stones, instead of desks, is govt providing more stones?”

Kingsley Okwema opined, “CS Magoha should first construct classrooms before talking of resumption of school. Before Corona classrooms were carrying 200% of their capacity. How about now? We need more than thrice the number of classrooms we had.”
