Exams of Misfortune? Terrible events during this year’s KCPE and KCSE

This year, the National examinations have been marked with quite a number of unfortunate events.

In any examination period, many expect rigging of exams among other small barriers like lateness to affect the normal course.

However, this year has had a fair share of that, but unfortunate events have also plagued the exams.


From a headteacher who showed up to collect examination papers drunk, to students being hospitalized for inhaling hazardous chemicals, this year's Exams had quite a number of unfortunate events. 

Here are some unfortunate events that happened in the exams;

1. David Ngerich from Sonokwek Primary School, reportedly staggered into the exams collection center and demanded to be served first.

2. In Trans Nzoia county, Cherusha Nyakeri, a teacher at St Monica Girls Kitale was admitted to hospital after she was allegedly exposed to Xylene, a chemical used during the 2019 Chemistry practical paper.

This was after she inhaled the fumes that emanated from heating the chemical.

3. Police in Marani Sub County, Kisii county, were forced to fire in the air to disperse rowdy students caught smoking bhang at Kenyoro Secondary on Sunday night.

4. Stephen Oluoch, a candidate at Joel Omino Secondary School died at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) ICU where he had been admitted for three days.

5. On November 13, 2019, the Kenya National Examination Council announced that a teacher died while marking KCSE examinations.

His colleagues attributed to work pressure they were being subjected to.
