Precious Talent Primary school manager Moses Wainaina has blamed the collapse on a sewer line, which he says had recently been built behind the classrooms, weakening the building’s foundation.
This is after at least seven children were killed after a classroom collapsed in the Nairobi-based school this morning.
Children could be heard crying as dozens of residents tried to free them using their bare hands from beneath the mountains of debris.
Backpacks, school books and lunch boxes could be seen under fragments of the iron sheet roofing and timber.
Officials have confirmed the death toll of seven and said more than 30 others have also been rushed to the hospital.
Grief-stricken parents have also been pictured rushing to the scene and comforting each other.
One woman collapsed on the floor in tears as she looked at the rubble.
Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang, as well as the Kenya Red Cross, have confirmed they are at the scene.
The charity tweeted: "Classroom with pupils inside collapses at a school along Ngong road, Nairobi.
"Search and rescue efforts ongoing, Kenya Red Cross to set up an information/tracing desk and offer psychosocial support services."
