SUMMARY

Olivia and Sophia hold on to the top two spots on the girls' list, which is unchanged from 2018

Muhammad is top of the boys' list, but Oliver dropped from second place to fourth

The most popular baby names of 2019 so far have been revealed, including a host of new monikers inspired by hit Netflix shows, Love Island and Game of Thrones.

A number of names popular in the 80s are also making a comeback, and despite the uncertain (and sometimes laughable) political landscape many British parents have found inspiration from what's going on at Number 10.

Parenting website BabyCentre has analysed the baby register for the past six months to find out what names mums and dads have been picking for their new arrivals.

Olivia and Sophia hold on to the top two spots on the girls' list, which is unchanged from 2018.

Lily is a new entry at number three, overtaking Amelia. Freya jumped up an impressive 15 places earning a place in the top 10 for the first time.

Muhammad is top of the boys' list, but Oliver dropped from second place to fourth.

Noah takes the runner up spot followed by George after our future king.

There are also lots of popular 80s names popping up, including Jason, John, David, Hannah and Emma.

Lorna Marsh, senior editor at BabyCentre, said: "We are seeing a real rise in strong and stable names, especially those with a 1980s twist.

"Whatever anyone’s thoughts on that decade’s politics, they were at least more settled.

"Perhaps this is why parents of baby Michaels and Maxines are compensating for the current turmoil with solid 80s choices."

One parent went for a very political option, naming their little one Blair Margaret.

The experts have also noticed the rise of many names inspired by popular TV shows.

Game of Thrones' actors Maisie Williams, who plays Arya, and Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys, both clearly had an impact with both names featuring on the list.

Meanwhile character names Tyrion and Theon rose in popularity and 2019 has even seen a registration for the double character combo of Arya Cersei.

Many of the contestants on ITV's hit reality TV show Love Island also feature, including Amber, Kem, Camilla, Kady, Cara, Nathan and Marcel.
