Police officer arrested in connection with Barclays Bank ATM theft

An Administration Police officer was on Friday arrested in connection with the theft at several Barclays Bank of Kenya ATMs in Nairobi.

According to the DCI, Constable George Gachungui Njoroge, who is based in Isiolo, is a key suspect in the case and he conspired to steal from an ATM located at Kenya Cinema in the Nairobi CBD.

@APSKenya Constable George Gachungui Njoroge who is based in Isiolo area was arrested yesterday evening by @DCI_Kenya Detectives from the #ECCU. He’s one of the key suspects in the ongoing investigations into the loss of millions of shillings from @Barclays_Kenya ATMs in the City.


“The suspect together with others conspired to steal from @Barclays_Kenya ATM point located at Kenya Cinema within the City occasioning a huge financial loss to the Bank.

“Further investigations are still ongoing,” said the DCI.

On Thursday, DCI boss George Kinoti stated that the Sh14 million heist was an inside job and some employees of the bank must have been aware of what was happening.

“They know exactly what happened. The outsiders were just there to facilitate the operation, after which they go and share the money, but this time we will reveal to the public what happened,” he said at the Coast police headquarters in Mombasa.

“I do not know whether to call it robbery or not, but I cannot discuss much because the matter is still under investigation. But in due course we will give you the details of what exactly happened so that other institutions can learn.


“We’re about to finish the case and hand it over to him [the DPP]. Very soon the DPP will issue a comprehensive statement and I request him to deal severely with this,” he added.
