Modern and cultural dances and spoken word performances enthralled audiences at Mwaani Girls School yesterday during the Eastern Region Film and Theatre festival.
The 60th edition of the festival has been underway in Makueni County since Friday last week.
This year's theme is: Moral responsibilities among the youth.
The festival has brought together various schools in Eastern Region.
The region is comprised of Marsabit, Isiolo, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Kitui, Machakos and Makueni counties.
On Tuesday, Mwaani Girls, the host, staged a mesmerising modern dance, titled metamorphosis, on how the character of a child is shaped by their surroundings.
The dance also portrays the issue of bullying in schools. It narrated how students who are often bullied in school end up successful.
Another stunning performance was by Moi Girls Marsabit. The narrative used symbolism to tackle the thorny issue of sexual relationships among students in schools.
Cheap goodies
It showed how girls are lured into sexual relationships by being offered cheap goodies. Makueni Boys, with their play, Ramafosa, which had earlier emerged as the best in Makueni County, was also impressive.
The play, produced by Rapahel Diwani and directed by Sara Joshua, educated the audience about riots in universities and their consequences.
Machakos School staged a sterling play Black Spot about a child who was born out of wedlock, and how society treated him as a misfit.
Kangaru School from Embu presented a modern dance Harmony.
Regional Drama festival chairperson Dhillon Mugendi said this year's festivals have seen very quality performances compared to last year.
He said girls had shown more talent in drama than boys.
“The bar this year has been set high. However, girls are better than boys, and this year, we are doing a new genre - spoken word, which is doing well,” said Mr Mugendi.

Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association chairman Indimuli Kahi has been attending the event since last week.
Today, the gala will be attended by Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana accompanied by players in the education sector.
The national festival will be held later on in the year.
