#UhuruParkOffLimits – Kenyans express displeasure online after government closes Uhuru Park

By Robert Abong'o | Jan 24th 2018 | 3 min read

The Nairobi County Government has closed down Uhuru Park from any planned gathering or meeting until further notice.

“Notice is hereby given to the general public that Uhuru Park Grounds is scheduled to undergo phased improvement works in order to enhance usefulness to its visitors,” read a notice by Acting County Secretary Leboo Ole Morintat.

This comes days before the National super Alliance (NASA) announced that they would swear in Raila Odinga as ‘The People’s President’ on January 30th.

The notice has created an intense debate online, with suspicion about the timing of the closure being linked to NASA’s event.

Kenyans took to social media to respond to the sudden closing down, with most blasting the government on trying to stop NASA’s plan to swear in the former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga.

#UhuruParkOffLimits is just a fiction in the brain of @MikeSonko we shal be there take that to the bank we all belong to this country may Allah Bless you all— Jefferson Lutta (@jeffryBaraka) January 24, 2018

But on a serious note, the gov't of the day should have let NASA or is is NRM inaugurate their Chief Kadhi without hitches at Uhuru Park or anywhere else of their choice. No need for Sonko to pull this #UhuruParkOffLimits

@NationBreaking #UhuruParkOffLimits, Sonko will pour shit at Uhuru park from shit hall to block swearing in on 30th,Panic mode— Jeff W Musumba (@MusumbaJeff) January 24, 2018

What? Renovation. Renovation? I don't understand. This must be the madness of this century. #UhuruParkOffLimits #CountdownToCanaan— Ambassador Jumah (@ambassador_juma) January 24, 2018

Which one demands clean up: Uhuru park or the crime in the city? #UhuruParkOffLimits— Content Writer and e-mail Marketer. (@che_darius) January 24, 2018

Jubilee must know that NASA strategists always thinks 3 steps ahead in their moves, if @MikeSonko carried raw human waste to Jacaranda to block people's rally #UhuruParkOffLimits isn't a surprise, #NRM has countless options for venue, the fact is #RailaSwearingIn will take place— Retired Comrade (@retired_comrade) January 24, 2018

Closing down Uhuru park is not an issue here. Why is it only happening now? They can as well smear faeces just like they did in Jacaranda grounds but that won't stop the execution of an idea whose time has come.#CountdowntoCanaan #UhuruParkOffLimits— Ambassador Jumah (@ambassador_juma) January 24, 2018

#UhuruParkOffLimits to sum it all, jubilee is in panic mode. If memory serves me right, when @RailaOdinga was arriving from USA, same park was closed for "major renovation". One may ask for full disclosure about renovation otherwise it is a POLITICAL RENOVATION #JubileeRebelMPs— Robert Njenga (@NjengaRobert) January 24, 2018

#RailaSwearingIn ni kelele za chura. But if only RAO protested against bei ya unga with the same zeal, KENYA would be the best place in AFRICA to live in #UhuruParkOffLimits— #ChelseaFC die-hard |KENYA| (@bluez_fc) January 24, 2018

I won't be surprised if NASA doesn't have a plan B or did they seriously think they can swear in Raila at Uhuru Park. #CountdownToCanaan#UhuruParkOffLimits— DAUDI (@ItsDaudi) January 24, 2018
