Girls in public schools to get free sanitary towels

A decade ago, after sanitary towels were made more affordable through scrapping of taxes, girls studying in public schools in Kenya have another reason to smile after the government declared that free sanitary towels will be provided, following President Uhuru Kenyatta signing an act, effecting it into law on Wednesday.

The act which states that every girl enrolled in a public school should be given sanitary towels for free falls along the lines of aiming to get more young girls to go to school – go to class.

According to FSG’s 2016 report, about 70% of women still are unable to afford sanitary towels, which may be the reason why the president effected this act into law.

Many more girls are expected to enroll in public schools following this move, which is indeed a wise one, considering the hardships young girls face with regard to sanitation.
