Miriam Wawira: The society rejected me because I had no hands

Mirriam Wawira a 27-year-old mother of one revealed that the society rejected her because she had no hands but that has turned to be a blessing to her.

Speaking on Citizen TV during an interview on Wednesday Wawira said that she was born without hands and the society didn't fully accept her. The society viewed her disability as a bad omen and a curse.

“The society was so furious with me and they wanted to do away with me.It is my mother who decided to take me to a children's home where I was to be far from the community which was not ready to accept me,” said Wawira.

In the process, she was introduced to an Indian guy who sponsored her to school. She enrolled at Kangaru Girls in Embu a place she thought will bring her solace now that she was away from home.

Mirriam said that it was, all the same, the other students sympathised with her, always wanting to assist her in each and everything, making her feel she was a lesser human being.

“ My fellow students were so sympathetic. Almost wanting to do things that I thought I can do on my own, for example brushing my teeth, washing my clothes, carrying me because they thought I could not walk,” said Mirriam.

She requested the school principal to transfer her to another school where she could be taught on how to be independent.

While there she came to accept herself because the environment accepted her.

According to her, her mother has been a source of inspiration and she appreciates her for teaching her on how to be independent.

Mirriam added that despite her not having hands she can do everything someone with hands can do. She revealed that she can cook, type, receive her phone, apply make-up and feed her child using her legs.

Meanwhile, she appreciated her husband Samora Bogecho whom she got married to five years ago, for being there for her.
