Turbulent times rock Kenya Sevens in Canada

A wobbly start for the Kenya Sevens was evident after losing their two openings matches in Vancouver. The Shujaas lost 28-14 and 15-5 to England and South Africa- bidding the main cup a bye.

The local boys found solace after a 26-19 win over Chile in their last pool match. Kenya Sevens, who managed a solitary point last year at the same venue, were demoted to compete for the Challenge Trophy once again.

Innocent Simiyu’s squad proceeded to the semis after a 19-17 win over Scotland, thanks to Frank Wanyama’s late try.

Kenya Sevens failed to repeat the same fete achieved in Las Vegas last week, as they were bundled out of the Challenge Trophy after losing 7-26 to Samoa in the cup semi-final.

Billy Odhiambo, who was topping the Series top performer’s chart in the USA, is now fourth. Dan Norton currently leads the log with 72 tackles, 37 breaks, 15 offloads and 121 carries totaling to 245. The Englishman also equaled Collins Injera’s world record of most tries scored at 243.

Kenya has dropped one slot to 12th in the latest HSBC Sevens Series standings with 40 points, after bagging five points in Canada.

England toppled South Africa 19-7 in the main cup finals, to win their second silverware of the 2016-17 World Rugby Series.

Despite that loss, the Blitzboks are still soaring top high with 126 points, England is distant second with 103 points. Fiji, New Zealand, and USA finish off the top five in that order.

The 16 nations head to Hong Kong for the next round on April 7-9.
