The increase in the number of road accidents during festive seasons may be as a result of greed and fatigue. This is according to a research I carried out.
Last week, on Friday evening, I was among the many travelers at a bus terminus in Nairobi seeking to travel upcountry. Fortunately enough, I joined the few lucky ones who got a ticket in a minibus en route to Kitale, after a fierce struggle I must say. I sat next to the driver, he looked tired. My interactive character kicked in right from the beginning of the seven-hour journey. The driver was also keen on topics I threw over for discussion. He was very excited and kept on insisting that I shouldn't stop talking to him all through. He opened up at some point by telling me he had not slept for a number of days and could barely keep his red eyes open.
I asked him why his boss isn't letting him rest and his answer was precise: he wants to make more money! I realized why he was insisting on the discussion to go on and on.It was simply to keep him awake. I was so afraid of his revelation of not sleeping for some days throughout my journey.
Thank God no major mishaps happened along the way. However, I'm still wondering why should those managers in P.s.v sector allow such exhausted drivers to drive putting lives of many passengers at risk. In this case, I think the management of the P.s.v Sacco's should be responsible enough to ensure that travelers are in safe hands. NTSA should also devise a way of dealing with such issues to boost safety on our roads.
