THE ENLIGHTENED MASENO UNIVERSITY

The recent lighting project has been of much benefit to the Maseno Township and the university as a whole.

Maseno market area is now a whole new world, so different from when there were no streetlights.

"These streetlights have been of great aid to us as business people," Priscilla Akelo, a mama mboga says.

“Lighting up the area has given us an assurance of more profit each day, due to the fact that we operate into late hours selling to our dear customers who are mostly students," she added

The street lighting project is backed up by solar power lighting, which ensures that businesses in the market are uninterrupted in the event of a power outage.

Since the installation of the street lights, the cases of robbery have drastically reduced. One is able to walk during the night without fear of being attacked, attests Akelo.

The street lights not only ensure longer working hours and security but also has made the town more beautiful. A butcher I interviewed man said that the lights bring out a beautiful scene with their arrangement.

Maseno University students are beneficiaries as well.

Speaking to two female third-year students, Beth Wanyoro, the former Maseno University Vice president and Faith Mwaki, both confirm that the streetlights have enhanced security.

"A while ago, rape cases could be reported but have since reduced, courtesy of this project," said Ms. Wanyoro. "We easily access facilities like libraries for studies at night," added Beth Wanyoro.

"Nights are like day time and thereby we easily carry out our group discussions during the night." Faith Mwaki concluded.
