In Africa The Constitution Is '' Just A Book''

It's everywhere; you watch it on television, listen to it on radio and even read about it in newspapers. When you open your Twitter, Facebook or Myspace accounts, you won't miss seeing it being cited somewhere on those pages. Known to many as being in control but to others as pure dictation of power.

Of course, I'm talking about African leaders clinging onto power till end times. I won't mention them because the entire world knows them and even makes jokes about them. Africa has been known all over for being a continent where once one gets in government, power belongs to them for eternity. And this is the complete opposite of democracy.

A violation of the constitution where the President in power orders the Parliament to alter certain clauses within the constitution so as extend one's term is considered undemocratic. A good example is Rwanda. This occurs when one feels the sweetness of power hence the need to continue enjoying it. And because of the failure of citizens to react to such issues, he/she will carry on with the plan, without objection.

Some, like Uganda and Zimbabwe, put the Book of Law aside and go on with struggle for the highest office in the country. Since they literally own the government and its infrastructure, getting elected is as easy as a pie. They use state resources to control the way voting is conducted. They even entice voters with cash just to get in office.

However, when one finds out what they are engaging in, which is unconstitutional, one is swiftly taken down as he/she is seen as hindrance to their careers. Now where is the rule of law in such situations? Does it even apply? The answer of course is NO since the major players of this game are the ones in control of government.

Therefore, in such countries, the constitution is seen merely as a book with written rules that only govern the unfortunate. Those who only hear of democracy but have never felt its presence.
