Troops' stay in Somalia necessary for peace

It seems most of us do not understand what it would mean for Kenya to withdraw its troops from war-torn Somalia.

Many Kenyans say we should withdraw the troops because our soldiers are being killed by the Al Shabaab.

We need to realise that Kenyan soldiers are in Somalia because they need to solve the problem that is terrorism once and for all. There is no way we can stop the Al Shabaab attacks in Kenya when the terrorist ideas and financing are healthy and alive in Somalia.

Secondly, Al Shabaab militants claim North Eastern region is part of Somalia, which is why they keep attacking our officers working in those areas.

Lastly, the moment we withdraw the Kenya Defence Forces from Somalia, it would be a clear indication that we have lost to terrorism and what will happen next is likely to be a disaster.

It is high time we appreciate what our brave men and women have done to make our world safer. The people of Somalia are also suffering and they deserve peace in their country.

Those saying, "Americans left who are we to stay" should also avoid this mentality. Americans left that's true but we border Somalia and are likely to be more affected by Al Shabaab terror activities than they are.

We have been hosting many Somalia refugees for a long time making us susceptible to attacks from Al Shabaab than any other country in the world.

Our brave servicemen and women should keep fighting.
