Kathuri Murungi: I learnt martial arts in campus for self defence

I joined Egerton University, Njoro Campus in 1994 for a Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Resource Management.

Learning was fun. The classes were not packed and so were the hostels. I was a tenant at Hollywood and Buruburu hostels — which were well-furnished.

My most memorable unit was Environmental Science and Environmental Conservation Management. I however hated Technical Drawing which involved architecture-like concepts that did not resonate well with my intellect at the moment.

My favourite lecturer was one Dr JM Ndonda, who often referred to me as “Mr President” — his mastery and teaching methodology was unmatched.

Outside class, I learnt martial arts purely for self defence. You never knew what or who could attack you during the multi-party agitation era. On matters politics, I was not very active in student leadership, even though I ensured I always voted for my favourite candidate.

My most memorable time in campus was when the semester was just starting — we had too much money to stay in class and concentrate. We dined and ate like kings. During weekends, we would go to Nakuru town for jam sessions mostly at Coco Savana Club. That’s when we were loaded with Helb money. When broke, we would settle for Njokerio where liquor was affordable
