One million Kenyans at risk of contacting STIs as condom shortage bites

About one million Kenyans are at risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases this year, a non-governmental organisation has warned.

This comes following latest claims that about a similar number of condoms have gone missing at the Kenya Medical Supplies Managements (Kemsa).

“That means one million could be infected because of the missing condoms, that is so bad and shameful,” said The King’s Condoms Promotion CEO Stanley Ngara

He added: “The government should not keep quiet because people will use that excuse to engage in unprotected sex.”

For months now, the distributor said he had been receiving many calls from Kenyans asking him for free condoms, thus he claims that he had suspected that something was amiss.

“I usually get them from government organisations and distribute them in some major events across the country but for some months, I had not been getting enough,” he added

“If things remain as they are, I will mobilise sex workers for huge demonstration at Kemsa officers so that the government can feel the shame of exposing its citizens to such risks,” said Ngara.

According to the report, goods sent to the authority’s warehouses included 908,000 mosquito nets, 1.1 million condoms and tuberculosis drugs worth Sh10 million were missing under unclear circumstances.
