Lynda Nyangweso planning to take over the music industry

With her radio show and daily celebrity gossip segment doing well, Lynda Nyangweso, 24, is now planning to take over the music industry with the release of her new single, writes SHIRLEY GENGA

Pulse: Describe yourself in three words...

Lynda: Down for whatever!

P: You have an accent, where did you grow up?

L: Canada. My family relocated to Ottawa in 1998 when my mother landed a job in Foreign Affairs department. I was about nine and it was an amazing experience. We were so blessed as a family and quite frankly, I do not think the five of us would be as close as we are had it not been for Ottawa.

P: When did you move back to Kenya and was there any culture shock?

L: We came back in 2007 when I had just turned 18. Culture shock is an understatement! The first thing we noticed was the dust and many Kenyans walking around looking stressed. It is funny because I’m probably a stressed-looking Kenyan now (laughs).

P: When and how did you land a job at Kiss FM?

L: I began working for Kiss in 2010 just before Christmas. To be honest, I never thought of radio. I thought my voice was too squeaky but after the Presenter Show ended on KTN, I was called for a screen test at Kiss TV, which was launching, but I was totally unprepared and showed up looking like a joke.

P: What happened next?

L: I guess I did well because I was called for a second interview. I made sure that I dressed the part (laughs). After I did the second screen test, Shaffie Weru asked me if I had ever thought of being on radio. Before I could think twice Caroline Mutoko offered me a late night slot. The rest, as they say, is history.

P: What do you think is your X-factor?

L: I was once told that the reason I get away with being mean to celebs during my daily gossip slot is because I am likeable. So I think I will go with that. I am likeable.

P: You also dabble in music. Tell us about it?

L: Music is something I have always wanted to do but always made excuses about. Finally, my family threatened to disown me if I did not use my talent (laughs). Then I met my producer Ben Omolo and everything just fell into place.

P: How would you describe your sound?

L: My music is a representation of myself. It basically changes with my mood.

P: Tell us about your new single...

L: I recently released my debut single, You need Jesus on reverbnation.com and sound cloud. I love it because it is the perfect introduction to the world. This is definitely just the beginning.

P: When can we expect an album from you?

L: I really do not want to rush into that because I want a product that can stand the test of time. Watch this space!

P: Apart from radio and music what else do you do?

L: Well, believe it or not, I am a butcher by extension. My parents run butcheries in Kakamega, which is my third job, so every time I am on leave, I  serve the best cuts in Western province.

P: Do you have anyone special?

L: Yes, I am pretty happy. I have found the most amazing man in the world and we have been going strong for three and a half years. I am so blessed to have him in my life.

P: Any stalkers...

L:I have been on radio for two years now and so far so good, except maybe for weird male callers I  get during my Late Night Show!

P: Where do you see yourself in the next ten years?

L: I honestly just want to make a name for myself. I hope to inspire just one insecure girl positively!
