Conor McGregor has signalled his intent to eventually buy a sports team after suggesting he could purchase Manchester United.

The Irishman has amassed huge wealth during his time in the UFC after becoming one of the organisation's biggest stars.

He reportedly pocketed just over £90m when he took on Floyd Mayweather in 2017.

McGregor has ventured into different industries with his own brand of whisky and is now being linked with a sports club - namely United.

He has claimed he could do "big things for a club" as the Red Devils look to return to the summit of English football.

In the midst of the Super League fallout, the Glazers are again facing calls to sell the club.

He said: "A conversation came up regarding Celtic first to be honest. To acquire shares from Dermot Desmond.

"I am certainly interested in acquiring a sports team at some stage! Both Celtic and Man United are teams I like for sure.

"But I am open. I feel I could do big things for a club."

Desmond once held shares in United but sold them to the Glazers before buying into Celtic.

The Irishman is now the largest individual stakeholder in the Scottish club.

United's owners have vowed to improve their relationship with fans as they face huge backlash following their part in the proposed Super League.

The Glazers have been at the helm for almost two decades but have long endured a difficult relationship with the club's supporters.

United was valued at £3.05bn by Forbes in April, making them the fourth most valuable club in the world.

McGregor's net worth meanwhile stands at an estimated £181m.
