Kenya national women's football team Harambee Starlets may opt out of this month’s Africa Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) in Ghana due to lack of funds.

According to FKF president Nick Mwendwa, they have only until Tuesday next week to ensure Starlets receive air tickets.

According to Mwendwa, it will be difficult to honour the tournament if they fail to meet the Tuesday deadline.

“The team has been in camp for two weeks but we have not received any money from the government yet time is running out. The window is closing fast and we have just until Tuesday to confirm our travel," said Mwendwa.

“It is unfortunate we find ourselves in such a situation after doing a lot of hard work of building this team,” he said.

If Starlets fail to travel, they risk being banned by Confederation of African Football (CAF) for missing the tournament.

The team will today play Ghana in a friendly match at Kasarani.
