A former England football star says he is on the “road to recovery” after undergoing a five-hour heart operation, according to the Sun.

Carlton Palmer, who was topped 18 times for England, tweeted from his healing facility bed to thank fans for their kind wishes after specialists played out the surgery through his crotch.

In another tweet, the former Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United midfielder conceded he had "a serious startle" yet was looking to what's to come.

The 50-year-old, who is currently an expert on the BBC's Final Score, said he was presently anticipating a cool Christmas in Sheffield and New York.
