It is a huge relief for Kenyan swimming fraternity as the International Swimming Federation (Fina) has allowed Kenyan swimmers to compete in the association’s sanctioned events.

However, Fina said the swimmers will compete as individuals and members of the International Fina Athletes (IFA) and not as national team.

In a letter addressed to the Sports Disputes Tribunal Chairman John Ohaga dated May 23, 2022, Fina’s Head of Legal Department Loic Loutan said two Kenyans Swaleh Abubakar and Lucia Ruchiti will be allowed to compete in the 2022 Fina World Championships scheduled for June 17-July 3 in Budapest.

“The two will therefore be the sole athletes from Kenya entitled to compete in the Budapest championships as IFA, both accompanied by respective team officials,” stated the letter.
