Barding are champions of the inaugural 2019 Nyapere Youth tournament.

The Siaya County giants outplayed over 24 teams that took part in the tournament to emerge winners after edging out Mur Green 2-0 in the final.

For their trouble, Barding pocketed Sh100,000 as cash prize, jerseys and a trophy, while the runner-up won Sh50,000 and jerseys.

Ochilo defeated Ojwando Boys 4-2 in post-match penalties to win the Sh30, 000 third-place playoff awards.

In the women’s category, Mur Malanga Queens defeated Upanda Ladies 3-0 to win the championships, whose aim was to address problems facing the community like crime, drug abuse and other socio-economic affairs.

Tournament sponsor Leonard Nyapere said a few of the players have been given sports scholarships in secondary schools and colleges and he plans on hosting the tournament annually.

“My main agenda was to try and help the young talented players grow their sport as they also seek to develop their talents and I am glad some of them have been picked for the scholarships,” he said.

“Our goal is to attract teams in the Kenya Premier League and Betika Super League to absorb these players in their academies.”

Speaking after the win, Barding captain Zablon Odhiambo thanked the sponsor for organising the tournament, saying it was a good initiative for the youth especially during this festive season.

“We wish to thank Nyapere for their noble idea of bringing together many youth from  South East Alego to exchange ideas and showcase their talent,” he said
