Golf: Home golfer Hirani and Jamal call shots at Nyali tournament

Niran Hirani made good use of his home course skills to emerge the overall winner in the 2019 Sanlam Insurance golf tournament at Mombasa’s par 71 Nyali Golf and Country Club, on Saturday.

Playing off handicap 25, Hirani carded an excellent 41 stableford points to claim the title in the day long 18-hole tournament that attracted 135 golfers.

Hirani’s victory came after levelling three pars with 11 bogey shots against double bogey shots in the rest of both nines.

“The course was playing well and I am happy with this victory. I had practiced well and hope to keep playing well in subsequent tournaments,” said Hirani.

Club mate handicap 7 Liban Roba was the men winner on 39 points, relegating handicap 23 Sanjay Kotecha to the men runner-up slot on a point differenc.

Handicap 22 Suresh Hirani was third with 37 points.

Lady golfer Allysa Jamal, playing off handicap 16, emerged tops on an excellent score of 38 points, while handicap 15 Terry Odoo, on 37 points, was the lady runner-up.  

Handicap 6 Zayan Din, on 36 points, won the Guest prize, while handicap 20 Heinz Breitner, on 37 points, was the best senior. Handicap 23 Ally Is Haq was the best Junior.

At the par 71 Muthaiga Golf Club, handicap 11 Florence W. Maina carded 36 points to emerge the overall winner of the Lady’s Captain (Rosemary Mkok) golf tournament.

Handicap 18 J.N. Mwaniki was the men winner on 36 points, while handicap 11 J.G. Iracha took the men runner-up slot on 38 points.

Handicap 14 Liz Armitage, who had 35 points, won the Silver Category, while handicap 21 Nelius Kariuki, on 34 points, was the Bronze winner.

Handicap 24 Peninah Waita carded 35 points to win the Guest lady prize as handicap 10 Godwin Wangongu took home the Guest Men winner prize on 33 points.

At the par 72 Ruiru Sports Club, handicap 27 Kennedy Wandera beat a team of 214 golfers to win the Safaricom  Golf tournament played on Saturday, after carding 42 points.

Handicap 23 George Wachira was the men winner on 38 points while handicap 12 Joseph Boro was the men runners up on 37points. [Maarufu Mohamed]
