Calls for UEFA Super Cup replay as footage shows Liverpool goalkeeper doing something illegal

Fans have claimed that Adrian's crucial penalty save in the UEFA Super Cup shouldn't have stood because the Liverpool goalkeeper was off his line when the spot-kick was taken.

The Reds beat Premier League rivals Chelsea in a shootout to win the European trophy for the fourth time after the game finished 2-2 in Istanbul.

The former West Ham stopper, who was making his first start for his new club in the absence of the injured Alisson, saved the decisive spot-kick from Tammy Abraham to secure victory for Jurgen Klopp's side.

However, several people watching the match believe that the forward's penalty should have been retaken after a replay showed that the 32-year-old crept forward from his line as the shot was struck.

VAR was not used to penalise the Liverpool keeper for his illegal positioning

"Adrian was miles off his line, should’ve been retaken. UEFApool at it again" tweeted one Chelsea fan while another added: "Adrian's legs were off the line though. I thought this was a rule?!"

A third continued: "Surely that has to be taken again because of how far off the line Adrian was?"

"Adrian was off the line when Tammy Abraham took his penalty," said a fourth. "Goalkeepers are supposed to have at least one foot on the line. Should have been retaken?"

A fifth viewer concluded: "So, genuinely what is the point of VAR?!. Adrian clearly has both feet off the line when Abraham strikes the ball, but it’s not been retaken. Utterly ridiculous. "

The defeat means that new Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is still looking for his first win since taking charge at Stamford Bridge after Sunday's 4-0 loss at Manchester United .

However Lampard's side showed put on a strong performance in Istanbul and was the stronger of the two teams in the first half in Istanbul

They took the lead in the first half through Olivier Giroud and almost doubled their lead through new signing Christian Pulisic, but the American saw his strike ruled-out by the offside flag.

Liverpool got back on level terms early in the second half when Sadio Mane finished from close range after some good play from Roberto Firmino.

Mane struck again in extra time to put Klopp's side ahead, only for Jorginho to put Chelsea level from the penalty spot a few moments later after Tammy Abraham was brought down by Adrian.

However, the Spaniard was able to produce the crucial save from the forward to secure a fourth Super Cup triumph for the Reds.
