Malik crowned 2018 boy junior champion

Windsor’s Taimur Malik and Ashley Awuor of Golf Park are this year's boys and girls' Junior golf champions.

The two were crowned last weekend at Sigona Golf Park in Nairobi.

They were feted during the Junior Golf Foundation of Kenya (JGF) annual gala after the 2018 strokes play Championships, the last tournament in its 2018 calendar.

Malik and Awuor emerged winners in order of merit calculated on the best 10 rounds in one year.

“I am very grateful for being the junior and I thank my parents and the club for their support,” said Malik.

On her part, Awuor was equally delighted with the accolade.

“I have been playing so hard and it’s great to be the champion after a tough and challenging year.”

Muthaiga’s Zubair Khan scooped the Division A player of the year award for the 17-21-year-old category while club-mate’s Kellie Gachaga claimed the same for the girl.

Sigona’s Adam Tayebjee won the Division B boy player of the year award (14-16-year-old), while Faith Ontune from Golf Park, won the girls' category.

Division C boy player of the year award for golfers under 13-years went to  Muthaiga’s Junaid Manji, while Golf Park’s Channelle Wangari was the best girl in the same category.

Muthaiga’s Mutahi Kibugu carded a round total of 224 (79,73,72) to emerge the overall gross winner of the 2018 Sigona Junior Strokes play Championships. Golf park’s Doris Mideva, on 207 nett (64,75,68), was the overall nett winner.

The gross winner for the U13 was claimed by Golf Park’s Channelle Wangari on 254 gross (83,83,88).

Meanwhile at the par 73 Kitale course, David Some, playing off handicap 14, carded 83 gross to emerge the overall winner of the 2018 Mulembe golf Society at the weekend.

Some defeated a field of 96 golfers including professionals.

“I have played well to claim the title despite missing the course for four years," said Some.

The Society chairman Sammy Itemere, playing off handicap 12, was the Society Champion on 93 gross while Eldoret  Club’s chairman handicap 5 Andrew Chelogoi was the guest winner on 79 gross.

Kitale’s Naomi Wafula claimed the lady winners’ prize.
