Ole Gunnar Solskjaer takes over as the new interim boss of Manchester United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been appointed as the new Manchester United interim manager.

The former forward has been given the nod by Ed Woodward and United chiefs to take over from Jose Mourinho, who was sensationally sacked on Tuesday following a poor run of form.

Sunday's 3-1 defeat at great rivals Liverpool was the final nail in the coffin for Mourinho, who had been hanging on to his role for some time.

Solskjaer's name was accidentally on Tuesday evening and the official announcement followed quickly on Wednesday morning.

According to the club, Solsjaer will take charge of the first team with immediate effect and will remain in place while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new full-time manager. He will be joined by Mike Phelan as first-team coach, working alongside Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna.

“Manchester United is in my heart and it’s brilliant to be coming back in this role. I’m really looking forward to working with the very talented squad we have, the staff and everyone at the club,” said Solskjær.
