Real Madrid have hit out at plans for bitter rivals Barcelona's to play a La Liga match in Miami.

The 13-time European champions released a strong statement saying they believe playing a match abroad would damage the "integrity and equality" of the Spanish game.

La Liga chief Javier Tebas is pressing ahead with controversial plans to arrange a league game in the States with the January 26 fixture between Girona and Barcelona pencilled in.

Champions Barca have remained tight-lipped but Madrid have serious concerns.

They said: "Real Madrid cannot agree to one of the matches of La Liga, which we participate in, being played voluntarily at a neutral ground.

"It is surprising that such a proposal comes from someone who should maintain a perfectly impartial position.

"It is surprising that the actions of La Liga try to justify an interest with respect to the fans who, curiously, they did not take into account when commercialising the broadcast rights.

"The broadcast rights for the matches were sold to beIN for the United States."

Tebas said earlier this month that an overseas match would see La Liga opened up to a whole new audience.

"I hope that on the 27th of January at 2:45 p.m. at Hard Rock Stadium, Barcelona and Girona will play," he said.

"It's an important strategy to expand our brand in the United States. For the American fans, if they see it on TV, it's not the same as going to an official game. It generates passion and pushes our brand in USA in an important way.

"I think that is more of the [players' union], more political. I think the players in Barcelona and Girona would like the play in Miami. We are meeting and working to come to a solution."
