Sports Disputes Tribunal declines to stop FKF AGM: There are proposals to extend the term of office bearers

Gilbert Otieno went to the tribunal seeking to stop the federation from discussing changes to constitution.

The Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT) has declined to stop discussions on the change of term of office as proposed in the new Football Kenya constitution.

The court has instead asked petitioner Gilbert Ottieno (GMT) and Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to appear before it next Tuesday for a hearing and determination of the matter.

Ottieno went to the tribunal yesterday seeking to stop the federation from discussing and implementing a proposal to extend term of office bearers to a three terms of four years each as it contravenes the sports act.

But the tribunal declined to issue an order seeking to stop the discussion. “I was deeply involved in the discussions culminating in the enactment of the sports act and therefore find it unfair that the federation is proposing amendments that go against it and it is the reason I went to court,” said Ottieno.

Ottieno said he would do everything possible to ensure the amendment, if passed, is reversed.

The federation has already been served and is expected to respond by Monday before the matter comes up for hearing.

If the tribunal rules against the amendment, changes can only be made at either a special general meeting or another annual general meeting.

Several stakeholders have criticised the amendment and threatened to challenge it in court. FKF president Nick Mwendwa has however insisted he is ready to defend the amendment as it aligns the constitution with the Fifa and Caf statutes.

Meanwhile, hosts SoNy Sugar walloped Muhoroni Youth 5-1 at Awendo Green Stadium yesterday in a midweek league encounter.

SoNy started by raiding the visitors and within just three minutes, they had already won two corners.

Benjamin Mosha then twice set up George Abege who wasted no opportunity to give his side the lead.

Mosha then added the third goal in the 36th minute of the game before David Simiyu and Ademba put matters beyond reach for the visitors.

Muhoroni’s lone goal was netted by Maxwell Onyango in the 76th minute. The loss further complicates matters for the Kisumu-based side, who are already relegated to the National Super League. 

With the win, SoNy climbed to ninth with 35 points ahead of their fellow Sugar millers Chemelil.
