Homeboyz on course to retail title despite setback

Despite settling for third place at the Sepetuka Sevens Championships at the weekend, Homeboyz have maintained their top place with 68 points.

The National Sevens Circuit defending champions picked up 17 points from the tournament at Eldoret Sports Club to keep their title hopes high after they defeated Menengai Oilers 17-12 in the play-offs finals.

The Deejays could retain the title for the second year running if they finish above third position in the remaining two legs of the series in the Christie Sevens and Dala Sevens.

The Oilers, who finished fourth by collecting 15 points, have dropped from the third to the fourth spot with 58 points, two points ahead of Top Fry Nakuru RFC, who also dropped to fifth spot.

Sepetuka champions Kabras Sugar have jumped to second spot with 63 points after they amassed 22 points following their 26-7 beating of Kabeberi winners Resolution Impala RFC.

The defeat left Impala runners-up on the log with 61 points after they (Impala) beat Homeboyz 26-19 in the semi-finals of Main Cup Competition.

On their way to the finals, the sugar millers (Kabras) had stopped Oilers 39-0, forcing the latter to square it out with Homeboyz in the play-off finals.

Interestingly, all the four series of the tournament have been won by different teams, which shows the competitiveness of the series since it kicked off last month.

Homeboyz won the Driftwood Sevens in Mombasa, Impala clinched the Kabeberi Sevens in Nairobi, Kenya Commercial Bank won the Prinsloo Sevens in Nakuru, while Kabras Sugar scooped the inaugural Sepetuka Sevens.

As KCB dismissed Western Bulls 25-11 to claim the fifth place, it earned them 13 points to stay sixth with 55 points behind Nakuru RFC, who posted 56 points.

Catholic Monks won the 13th place final with a 15-0 win over Nondescripts after scoring their tries through John Isalambo, Ronnie Okello, and Caleb Kiprotich.
