Gor Mahia defensive midfielder Ernest Wendo is the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya player of the month for May 2017.

Wendo was officially presented with the award at Gor Mahia’s training base at Camp Toyoyo Stadium in Nairobi yesterday.

Wendo becomes the first defensive midfielder to win the prestigious award this season following his contribution that saw K’Ogalo go unbeaten by registering three successive wins and two draws in May.

With Wendo's assistance, K’Ogalo thrashed perennial rival AFC Leopards 3-0, Chemelil 2-0, Nzoia Sugar 1-0, and a 1-1 draw against Posta Rangers and Thika United four months ago.

Wendo beat three other finalists to the gong after he garnered 23 votes ahead of runners-up and Tusker FC custodian Duncan Ochieng (20 votes), third-placed Kepha Aswani of Nakumatt (19), and Ulinzi Stars' Stephen Waruru (18).

The votes were cast by seven members of the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya's Football Commission panel.

The feat earned Wendo Sh100,000 in cash, a 43-inch LG smart television, and a trophy while Sh50,000 was awarded to his team, Gor Mahia, which is currently commanding the Kenyan Premier League table with a wide margin. The Sh50,000 will be shared by the playing unit.

“This is a  very important day in my life. It is such a surprise with a great lesson that whatever you do, just do it better because you never know who is watching,” Wendo said.
