Rare birdie does it for Dhutia ...as US-based top lady amateur Josephine Ainley claims Machakos Open trophy
Cheers greeted Nyali Golf and Country Club’s former chairman Vishnu Dhutia after he rounded up the last par three-18th hole with a rare birdie in front of jubilant golfers.
Dhutia returned an excellent score of 67 nett to emerge the overall winner during the 2017 friends of the club Captain (John Stokes) golf tournament at the par 71 Nyali course.
The handicap 8 golfer had earlier sunk another rare birdie at the par four-16th hole, rolled a total of 11 pars and bogeyed the rest of the holes in both nines to beat 100 golfers in contention.
“My game was excellent and I am happy for the victory," said Dhutia.
Club mate handicap 18 Willie Mbote was the Men winner, while handicap 26 Nimisha Shah, with 77 nett, won the Lady's title.
Meanwhile, US-based top lady amateur Josephine Ainley “Jozi” shot 5 over for a total round of 77 gross to triumph during the Machakos Ladies Open over the weekend.
Jozi, playing off handicap 2, was one-under at the turn until she licked into the short rough on the par-4, 13th holing out with a bogey start.
On the par-4 15th, designated as the Longest drive hole, the long hitter’s tee shot didn’t clear of the trees, neither did her recovery shot make things better, missing out on a 30-inch putt, which translated to a double-bogey for her troubles.
Jozi is on vacation after national duty in Zambia.
