A blast from the past: Mary Elizabeth Okello

When you talk about private schools in Kenya, one of the most prominent ones that come to mind is the Makini Schools, and Mary Okelo and her late husband Joshua Awiri are the scholars behind Makini Schools. Elizabeth a daughter of an Anglican clergy Canon Jeremiah Awori, she comes from a family of famous Kenyan's including former vice president Moody Awori and the late Dr Nelson Awori.

In her own standing, Dr Mary Elizabeth Okelo is an achiever and has many firsts to her name. She is one among the first 13 girls sponsored by the government to study for their A- levels at the Alliance High School. She became the first woman bank manager in Kenya in 1977.
