The right time to meet his mum...wait, is it a good idea?

Relationships
As women, the moment we are introduced to our man’s folks is the moment we imagine that we are the one

At what point in a relationship should a woman introduce her man to her family? This is the question that has been eating up a number of women in the dating field. Not because they are not sure about their feeling, far from it. If anything, when women fall in love, they really do, head over heels. It’s all because they are not sure about the feelings of the men in their lives.

Yes, I said men, men who say this on one day and say that on another, regardless of the effects of their words. Somehow, the society allows a man to bring home as many women as he wants, introduce them to his folks and dance around musical chairs as he eliminates them one by one. The last woman standing gets the ring.

On the other hand, the same society will twist and turn its mouth like the Nigerian women when a woman tries to play the ‘sampling’ game while dating. This, therefore, leaves a woman with no choice but to strictly introduce one man to her family. As women, being the vulnerable creatures we are when it comes to love, the moment we are introduced to our man’s folks is the moment we imagine that we are the one. So we take that as a sign that it is time to take him to our folks.

Woe unto you sister, there are a lot of you in that line and if you do not play well during the musical chairs game, you might just miss a seat in his life.

My cousin Nancy knows too well what it means to take home a man because he took you to his home. First it was Peter, he fought a good fight, kept the faith and eventually finished his race with Nancy. Not even a proposal came through the race.

“Meeting his parents is not a license to say bye

to the dating game, keep the cards well,

you might just need to start playing the game all over again.”

Nancy cursed and I was quick to go and help her curse; seriously, how could Peter just end things after I had saved him on my phone as ‘Shemeji’? Then came Dafrao; that name alone should have raised a Red flag to Nancy, but it just didn’t. Six months into dating, she invited him to one of our family gatherings and as usual, we gave him a warm welcome.

After all, it was even his mother who dropped them to the function. Damn that closeness Nancy already had with his parents. When you get the chance to sit at the back left when your mother-in-law to be is driving, isn’t it sign enough that you clinched the gold medal in his life? Shock on us, two months later, ‘alipiga Nancy Dafrao’.

Nancy had reached her comfort zone and did not mind looking away for seconds as the musical chairs played. Just one second and she missed a seat when the music came to an end. Thank God I had not saved him yet as ‘Shemeji’.

As usual, moving on is part of life and sure enough Nancy has moved on. It’s been a year since we last heard of Dafrao and four months since Jack came into the picture. I somehow, have a soft spot for Jack, I don’t know why.

I keep telling Nancy that Jack will make the best husband for her, they are like a match made in heaven. On the other hand, Jack’s family has embraced Nancy wholeheartedly. In fact, Jack’s sister recently gave birth to a bouncing baby girl and guess who she named her after, yes, you guessed right, Nancy!

His parents back at home keep calling her to find out how both of them are doing. Nancy invites me along to their family functions and I never fail her, not when I am as ‘plotless’ as a bacteria. She has saved Jack’s mother on her phone book as ‘Super sub’; yes, she is the one who comes in to save the day when the match seems to be coming to an end and there are no goals forthcoming.

Meanwhile, I am the only relative to Nancy that Jack has ever met. To make it worse, he does not even know I am a relative. I was introduced as a best friend. It will remain so until we are sure only one chair is remaining after the musical chairs game comes to an end, and Nancy is the one on it. I swear this one we are not introducing!!!
